'Your front end looks like the Hindenburg'; ‘Buy some decent clothes and have more respect for your unborn child. You're not the first pregnant woman OMG'; 'Looser tops would look much more professional', ‘Nowhere on North America TV have we seen a weather reader so gross as you’. These are just some of the rude comments that Kristi Gordon, an anchor with British Columbia's news channel Global BC, received for her pregnant body.
Did these negative comments and body shaming affect her? ‘Yes’, she admits on a special episode on the channel where she and her fellow anchors Robin Stickley and Squire Barnes reflected upon the comments. She reveals that after reading the comments, she found herself checking her baby bump in the mirror and also asked her husband if she looked bigger than she realised. The harsh words had gotten to her.
But it didn’t stop her. Kristi took on the haters by reading some of the worst comments on the show and declared that she will not cover up and hide her pregnant body. She also stood up to flaunt her big bump and said, ‘You can't really hide something like this.’ The unstoppable Kristi, who epitomizes the #MyBodyMyRules mantra further added, ‘I am pretty confident person. I wouldn't be in this industry if I wasn't. I don't feel that this is really affecting me or has affected me.’
Though initially upset about the comments, Kristi came out of it unscathed and learning an important lesson, “Hopefully this can help us all be more aware of our impact on others.”
The episode sparked outrage online with women posting pictures of their own pregnant stomachs in Kristi’s support, calling her gorgeous and her bump beautiful! Some also used the #KushionsForKristi and posted her fake bumps in her support. Take a look...
