Double cleansing is the latest skin-care mantra that’s been making waves across the globe. It has been the norm for centuries in Japan, where it was the only way of completely taking off white metallic makeup and letting the skin breathe again. Here's all you need to know about the new beauty ritual.
What is it?
Double cleansing is very simply two rounds of cleansing or cleansing using more than one product – recommended only at the end of the day. The simplest combination is to use an oil-based product and then a gentle, foam-based one. You can also use cleansing milk or cleansing gel instead of oil, depending on your skin type. Ultimately, the idea is to have the heavier cleanser remove most of your makeup and excess sebum, and the lighter one refresh your skin and wash away dust, perspiration and dead skin.
Why do it?
Today, our faces take the brunt of pollution, sunlight, different makeup brands, dust, bacteria and even air-conditioning. At the same time, our skin sweats and secretes oils. All of these combined mean that your skin needs a thorough cleansing once you’re home.
How to do it?
Step 1 – Oil cleansing
Start with a dry face. Apply a suitable amount of cleanser on your forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck. Massage your skin in gentle, circular strokes to dissolve the makeup and draw out the impurities. Rinse with water. You can also choose to use a makeup remover from delicate areas like eyes and lips before this step.
Step 2 – Foam cleansing
Take a small amount of cleanser in your hand and work up a rich lather. Gently massage this foam over your face and neck, stroking carefully. Try to avoid touching your face with your hands too much. You can spend more time on your forehead and the sides of your nose. Carefully rinse with lukewarm water and remove all traces of foam. Don’t forget to wash your hairline. Blot your face gently with a towel.
