From comical cops to #relationship goals, Brooklyn 99 is a comedy series based on the detectives from NYPD which covers all aspects of friendships, relationships, workplace relationships and duh, crimes in a very humorous manner. Each character from this show has some meaningful virtues about themselves that make this show one of a kind. Here’s our take away from each character-
Captain Ray Holt

The stern, disciplined and admirable Captain of the 99th Precinct of New York, Raymond Holt is the first black gay Captain and a character on the show that everyone loves to impress. With his strict policies, the Captain brought about change in the workplace and gave everyone new dimensions of growth. What we learn from Captain Holt’s growth through the seasons is when someone is given the right kind of environment, love and friendships flow naturally. Through the seasons, the Captain gradually steps out of his shell and feels comfortable showing his true self among his workmates.
Detective Jake Peralta

Fun, funtastic and easy going Jake is a messy character who manages to create chaos wherever he is. Through the seasons, his mayhem does decrease but something to appreciate is his willingness to grow and his journey of bettering himself as a person. His commitment to friendships and trusting nature are definitely commendable and something to highlight from this character.
Detective Amy Santiago

Chaperone from her school dances and star kid from reading camps, Amy Santiago is all about being the prim and proper lady who likes her towels folded and her binders organised. Amy is constantly ridiculed for being uptight about work hours, files and rules. Through the seasons, Amy steps out of her ‘hardcore nerd’ character to enjoy herself, bend the rules and make informatory binders for her work buddies. Constantly feeling the need to impress her parents, Amy spends years being a perfectionist until she starts to realise that it’s okay to paint outside the lines.
Detective Rosa Diaz

The mysterious biker girl who enters the office clad in her wide collection of leather jackets, detective Rosa is an aggressive cop who loves violence and gets her work done. Rosa’s character development by the end of the show turns her into a good friend who provides her workmates a shoulder to cry on, a loving daughter and a woman that accepts herself. Rosa’s change from a mysterious cop to an ex-ballet dancer who comes out of the closet as bisexual is a heartwarming change we’re all in support of.
Detective Charles Boyle

Jake’s best friend, his best man and his stay-cation buddy, Charles is an ever loving family man who values love and friendships the most. Besides his admiration for Jake Peralta, Charles is also a food blogger who has the ultimate checklist to measure the quality of pizza. His kind nature, the love for his adopted son and willingness to go extra miles for his friends makes us all love this character.
Lieutenant Terry Jeffords

Like a turtle, hard shell on the outside but softie inside, Terry Jeffors is the heartthrob of the office who loves yogurt. Terry is a father that loves to play tea parties with his girls while he’s not busy being the father cleaning up after the detectives in his workplace. His kindness and understanding nature makes him the perfect character that everyone loves to seek shelter at.
Gina Linetti

Confidence, glamour and everything sassy makes the perfect formula to the Gina cocktail. A part time dancer who loves to rehearse on her work hours, Gina is the secretary to the Captain but a bawse to the precinct. Gina not only teaches us everyone in the precinct to love themselves but also gives us valuable lessons on self-love, believing in oneself and confidence to be authentic.
Hitchcock and Scully

Like two faces of a coin, Michael Hitchcock and Norm Scully are the oldest and slowest moving detectives that gets everyone worried about their love for food and sleep. The shocking revelation from their past as young and handsome detectives who were great at their jobs and amusing ways they find solutions to their problems is a pointer to all of us to not undermine ourselves and always love endlessly.
These characters on the show always prove to us that love, friendship and commitment to work will bring you happiness and make your lives great. The bravery and tenderness each character carries is definitely the cherry on top. If you haven’t already binged on this show, you might want to change your weekend plans.
