The gem and jewellery industry are responsible for a large sum of the carbon emissions that are responsible for global warming. Mining, a method that’s used to upturn the earth to reach precious stones, is especially dangerous to both the environment and the people involved in carrying out the mining activities. Does it mean that as responsible global citizens we must shun wearing jewellery altogether? Not really, at least not according to Ms. Ankita Gupta, founder, Syndiora, who is championing a new kind of revolution by using lab-grown diamonds in her contemporary jewellery.

Modern women are seeking jewellery options that are in tandem with their new-age style sensibilities. And Ms. Ankita believes that for this generation of smart and conscious shoppers, lab-grown diamonds can be the future of luxury. We indulge in a conversation with the founder of Syndiora, Ms. Ankita Gupta to discover her plans for ethical luxury jewellery brand as a part of raising awareness about it.

Can you tell us about your journey in the jewellery business? How did you start Syndiora?
When I worked in a gemological laboratory, I found that people were not vocal about lab-grown diamonds. I felt that if we could spread awareness, this would have a huge potential in the Indian market. I wanted to come up with a brand which deals in solely lab-grown diamond jewellery because I can visualise this as the future of luxury. When I started walking towards my goal, I felt making my own place in this industry can be challenging as it’s a man driven industry and people aren’t really accepting Lab Grown Diamond also there were no intention of educating the customers about cultured diamonds. Here, my father stood by me, became my pillar who believed in my vision and I give full credit to him to reach the place as has now.

What made you start working with lab grown diamonds?
When I started working, very few people were aware about lab-grown diamonds. Diamond mining release all harmful carbons in air. Lab grown diamonds are eco-friendly, conflict free and sustainable.

I saw the potential for jewellery embellishment with these and thought it is a sustainable alternative to natural diamonds as something similar happened exactly with natural pearls. It's just that new products make their place in the industry and the same I wanted for lab grown diamonds.

Can you tell us a little about the process of making diamonds in a lab?
There is no difference in the compositions of lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds. We can produce lab-grown diamonds within a week, whereas natural diamonds take years to form and are extracted by mining. In a laboratory, we make diamonds by using the HPHT (high pressure high temperature) method and CVD (chemical vapour deposition). Lab Grown Diamonds has similar chemical, physical, optical properties as Natural diamonds.

How different is working with lab grown diamonds as opposed to real diamonds?
It really feels good! As it does not harm the earth. We are leaving the planet to continue to be a habitable place for future generations. Diamonds produced in a lab are budget-friendly compared to natural diamonds. They are sustainable and conflict-free. Lab-grown diamonds are environmentally friendly.

What is your vision for Syndiora?
Syndiora’s vision is to make the earth a better place to live by resorting to environmentally sustainable methods of making diamonds. We also wish to make lab-grown diamonds the future of luxury by putting a modern twist on an outdated industry. We pledge to use ethical diamonds to craft conflict-free jewellery. Our goal is to be socially responsible for global societies. The purchase will not only make you feel good but you'll do good too.
