FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week, the most important 5 days in Indian fashion, is back in Mumbai with their on-ground event. After navigating the tricky minefield of COVID for the last few seasons, the fashion community is back with a collective spirit to create and from the looks of it, designers are unwilling to spend any time on making things that they find meaningless. Of everything that’s on the cards and multitudes of collections that are going to fill our feeds for days to come, here are some of the designer showcases that we are most excited to watch. Not only do they give us a glimpse into our zeitgeist but also remind us why fashion is so important in defining it.
Everything Is AK-OK
Veteran designer (and perhaps one of the country’s coolest) Anamika Khanna will open the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week on Tuesday, 11 October, where she will make a menswear debut with her pret line AK-OK. Coming out of her crucible of cool, we’re hoping to witness Anamika’s signature fluid jackets, tunics and draped skirts. This season is also touted to feature pristine whites, a subtle shift from her preferred palette of egg shell, ecru and ivory, handmade shibori work, and hints of denim. Her trademark rawness that she brings to her clothes with frayed appliques and slashed silhouettes will be present along with a mishmash of prints.
Return of Shahab Durazi
Long before words like gender fluid, seasonless and trendless made a permanent part of the fashion lexicon, master couturier Shahab Durazi had made them a part of his collection. The media shy designer has been one of the most venerated names in Indian fashion for those who are well-versed with his work. After taking a break for 12 years, Shahab will return to the runway on Wednesday, 12 October, with a retrospective collection that dates back to the last decade of his three decades long career, creating a sense of nostalgia with pieces reminiscent of the '40s and '50s.
Bloni at Fashion Week
Akshat Bansal of Bloni who last showed his collection as a part of the 2021 show in a collection called In Between XY is back, and this time as the winner of the fourth season of ‘Nexa Presents The Spotlight.’ In this new collection, The Preamable, that will showcase on Friday, 14 October, the designer brings his vision that was inspired by the complex human emotions and his use of clothes to portray how they’ve been restructured to sculpt the feelings in this new world where sometimes, altered realities lie in the balance. The idea is as to immerse his audience in this milti-senatorial presentation via his signature clothes that range the gamut from genderless silhouettes to non-quintessential fabrics.
Sustainable Glamour by Gauri & Nainika
Sister designers Gauri & Nainika Karan are known for their never-ending love affair with old-world Hollywood charm. In their new spring-summer collection Midnight Botanicals, which will be showcased on Friday, 14 October, the deisgners will display their forte of designing fluid feminine silhouettes in the form of flowy gowns, Grecian dresses with their signature high-lows, breezy jumpsuits and multitudes of red carpet-worthy outfits in a palette of dark and dreamy colours with their trademark wallpaper floral prints.
