The ubiquitous Kolhapuri has several avatars today. From the ethnic chappal and jooti favoured during festivities and dating back centuries, to the trendier anglicised slingback slip-ons and half-shoes, the Kolhapuri has gotten a designer makeover.
For instance, Label by Ritu Kumar recently launched a capsule Kolhapuri collection featuring open-toed flats with the Kolhapuri signature stitched detailing on the T-strap. The subdued colours—white, black, burgundy and navy—are what give the sandals their versatility. So while these flats go well with a salwar kameez, they complement trousers and full-length skirts as well.
Then there are interpretations of the chappal like Shift’s anglicised version with a slingback. These work with almost any casual outfits, from jeans and miniskirts to salwar kurtas and gathered long skirts.
There are cool design twists to the jooti as well, like the half shoe slip-on which could be paired with palazzos, baggy trousers, flouncy skirts or lehengas for fun fusionwear. And our favourite so far is the brogue jooti—an ingenious blend of the brogue and jooti, with a shoe lace front and checked sides and a jooti cut and styling. We cannot wait to try on our fusion Kolhapuris!
