Designer duo Gauri and Nainika recently launched their new bridal collection Garden of Eden at Lirika Pravod’s concept fashion store Neel Sutra at The Oberoi, Gurgaon. This collection of gowns, dresses, voluminous skirts and structured peplum tops adorned with lovely watercolours prints by Travis Bruce Black is ethereally beautiful and expectedly received rave reviews. At the launch event we caught up with the talented sibling duo to know more about how it all happened.
How did the collaboration with Travis Bruce Black come about?
Gauri: Nainika came across Black’s works online and she fell in love with them immediately. As we went through all his work, we were struck by the power of his paintings and the use of vibrant colour and imagined how wonderful these would look on our clothes.
Nainika: We contacted him online and informed him about our brand and asked him if he would like to collaborate with us. After checking out our website, he got back to us super-excited to be doing something with us and we bought some of his work to translate into prints for our clothes.
How did Masai Mara and the beauty of nature inspire you?
Gauri: We had always wanted to a Masai Mara inspired line because Nainika had gone to Masai Mara and taken stunning pictures of the wildlife there and we wanted to translate those prints on our clothes.
Nainika: I sent Travis those photographs and asked him to translate them into prints with his artistic sensibility and colours. So we have pictures of zebras and gazelles and deer that are now stunning prints on our clothes.
Gauri: We were also inspired by flowers like the bougainvillea, so we sent Nainika’s photographs of these lovely flowers to Travis who turned them into prints which we them turned into little laser-cut, hand-made flowers to be stitched on to our dresses. It was painstaking process but the exquisite results are there for all to see. It’s artistic and different and stands out anywhere.
