He’s the man every woman lusts to have at their wedding. And we’re not talking about the groom. As he plays mentor to 13 brides-to-be on the latest, sixth season of TV show Band Baaja Bride, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee gives us his biggest advice for trousseau shopping.
FEMINA: What is the current biggest trend in bridal fashion?
SABYASACHI: A return to our roots, as well the emergence of monochrome in the wedding scenario. In all, it's a very purist movement we'll see. On the other side people will also look at the emergence of cocktail wear which is inspired by the 1920s.
FEMINA: One item every bride needs in her trousseau?
SABYASACHI: Beautiful shawls, sarees and classic accessories which can stand the test of time. Because if you are going to incorporate a lot of fashion in your trousseau, you must remember that what you buy for your trousseau, you may not get a chance to wear it again.
FEMINA: What is the most important accessory for every bride?
SABYASACHI: I don’t think there’s one important accessory for a bride, it’s the entire ensemble. However, the shoes are definitely very important as they can make or break an outfit.
FEMINA: A piece of advice you give to every bride on the show Band Baaja Bride?
SABYASACHI: I tell all bride's that to be really beautiful they should keep everything simple and classy: be it their make-up, jewellery, attire. In your quest to become a gorgeous bride, do not try to overdo the wedding look and let it overpower your personality.
I tell the same thing to our grooms. We design understated clothing for the groom because the woman is dressed in complete bridal finery, the groom should step backward a little to complement her. It is not an ego battle but I think that when two people are trying to outdo each other, two positives in fashion can create a huge negative. One has to realize that on the wedding day, the bride and groom should also look good as a couple and it not of primary importance for them to look great individually.
Band Baajaa Bride will air every Friday at 10:00 PM on NDTV Good Times.
