  • Immerse Yourself in Istiklal Caddesi: One of the busiest and prime stretches in all the city, Istiklal Caddesi in Beyoglu is truly the pulse of Istanbul. Rows of shops offering up handicraft, food and the latest fashion trends, line the street on both sides. Often, you’ll see an uber-modern establishment in a grand old building. The din of thousands of people, both locals and travellers, having the time of their lives is a mesmerizing melody. Take up a spot at one of the cafes to do some people watching or duck into a restaurant to enjoy some local delicacies. Just remember not to be too generous with tips when the street performers come calling. If they recognize you’re from India, you won’t hear the end of the famous song ‘Awaara Hoon’ from the Raj Kapoor film Awara.

  • Enjoy the View From Galata Tower: Built in 1348, the Galata Tower was the tallest structure in the city at the time. From being used to monitor water traffic on the Bosphorus to acting as a look-out spot for fires in the city and even as a launching platform for budding aviators in the 17th century, it has served many purposes through its remarkable history. It has suffered its own share of troubles with invasions, fires and natural disasters, but has been restored and opened to the public since the 1960s. Climb up to the top of the tower for magnificent, sweeping views of Istanbul. The neighbourhood itself is a rather interesting one. Explore one of the antique shops in the adjacent lane or grab a cup of Turkish Cay in the café at the foot of the tower. Or head out towards the Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn to get some snacks from the many vendors.

  • Shop Your Heart Out in the Grand Bazaar: For Indians, the rush won’t seem as intimidating as to those from less populated countries. The chaotic jumble of shopkeepers, shoppers, visitors, locals is a sight that will remind many of the markets back home. The merchandise is as varied as it is interesting. While it may be tempting to pick up a lot of stuff, bear in mind that only certain goods are more likely to survive the journey back home. Make sure to pick up things such as ‘evil eyes’, ceramic saucers with beautiful patterns on them, coffee cups, tiles and Turkish towels. And although you’ll be approached by numerous vendors for Turkish delight, we’d suggest picking up this sweet treat from elsewhere.

  • Wander Through the Sultanahmet Square: Among one of the prime public spaces in Istanbul, the Sultanahmet Square has so much to see that you’ll end up spending an entire day here before you know it. Start off with the Hippodrome, an ancient public centre which used to host chariot races during Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Today, there are several monuments to these ancient cultures that remain. Head next to the Blue Mosque with its six minarets and the Hagia Sophia, with its incredible history. The queues for entry into these attractions can be long so try and get book passes online beforehand. There’s also the Basilica Cistern, an ancient water system for the city which was also used as a place of worship. Aside from the amazing remnants of history, there are plenty of vendors hawking delicious street food. Oh and for Turkish Delight, try one of the shops next to the square.

  • Cruise Along on the Bosphorus: The Bosphorus, also known as the Strait of Istanbul, connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Given its importance as a thoroughfare for many countries to reach the Mediterranean Sea, it has long been a strategically important water body with many battles fought to control it. Today, you can walk across one of the bridges across the Bosphorus, taking in the surrounding cityscape. Maybe try a fish sandwich served fresh off one of the many boats docked on the banks. If you’re not content simply wandering the banks, take one of the many ferry services to cross over or take a leisurely cruise that comes with a meal, drinks and the sunset as part of the package.

While it is hard to pick and choose the things to do in this great city, the five spots mentioned above should give you a crash course on Istanbul and its fascinating history and culture.
