You are in charge of your own safety and these women coders know it better than anyone else. Therefore, when these best brains in tech from around the world got together at the International Hackathon organized by the Global Fund for Women, they came up with app ideas that will help women the world over to stay safe. Take a look at the app ideas that these young women in the age group of 11-22 came up with in just 24 hours. We bet you'd wish they were available in your app store right now.
Não Me Calo (translates to ‘I Will Not Shut Up’)
Designed by: coders from Brazil
What is it:
This app allows you to rate your experience at bars, clubs, and restaurants etc. But not only on the food, drinks or services but on how the staff and patrons treat women. Users will highlight the businesses where they’ve encountered physical and verbal abuse and will help other women to not waster their money using interacting with those businesses.
Perv Radar
Designed by: coders from Tapei
What is it:
How about a website that alerts you about the safe and unsafe zones in your city or the new city you are travelling to? This app will let women flag areas where they have experienced some harassment. There is also a feature to add detailed information about the incident. The coders say this can also help the cops to track sexual harassment incidents by location and take necessary measures to make them safer.
Red Alert
Designed by: coders from Oakland
What is it:
A GPs sensor, which is so discrete that it can be attached to the underside of a bracelet, watch or a bag zipper without getting noticed, promises to help women in when caught in threatening situations. Just touching the sensor for five seconds will activate the "red mode" and send notifications about your current location to the already fed in contacts and the police.
Anti-date-rape game
Designed by: coders from New York
What is it:
Designed for women, this game aims at teaching men a lesson or two about sexual consent. The players are put in the shoes of a woman in a date-rape situation on a college campus.
Let’s talk about sex
Designed by: coders from Trivandrum
What is it:
Talking about sex is a taboo in many parts of the world. And that is exactly one big reason why sex education is not getting the kind of importance it deserves. But coders from Trivandrum, India have some answers. They created a website where girls can live chat with counselors and ask all their questions about sex, sexually transmitted infections, harassment and ways to report it etc.
