Location: Suzette, Venture Building, High Street Hiranandani Gardens, Powai
Timing: 9 am to 11pm
Ambience: Suzette is a French café and crêperie chain. Their third and biggest outlet in Mumbai is located in the heart of Hiranandani, Powai and has a bakery too. The place with 13 tables is intimate and has a homely and cosy feel to it. You get a distinct Parisian vibe, thanks to the industrial design, a chalkboard stating the day’s specials and a customisable menu.
What we loved: We were greeted by the affable Pierre, one of the three French professionals-turned-chefs, who started Suzette in 2011. They are known for their crispy organic buckwheat crepes and thin sweet crepes and the menu is extensive.
But if you don’t want the hassle of picking an option from the plethora available on the menu, go for the day’s specials. Or just their lunch combo (1 crepe of the day, 1 mini salad, 1 organic tea/espresso/latte/cappuccino, which at Rs 390 is quite affordable and filling. But Pierre made our choice was quite easy. We chose Avocat--it had avocado, feta, fresh and sundried tomatoes, fresh basil, roquette and French dressing, all rolled in a crisp yummy crepe. Foret, with sautéed mushrooms, creamed spinach and Emmenthal is the most popular crepe at Suzette. Liban, with hummus, feta, roasted peppers, grilled zucchini, fresh mushrooms, fresh tomatoes was a great mix of Lebanese and French cuisine. You really are spoilt for choice at the creperie.
The menu has a Make your own page, which allows you to customise the crepe by adding any of the ingredients listed in it.
To wash it all down, we had the sinful organic peanut butter, banana milk smoozie. But if you prefer to go the healthy way, there’s plenty of fresh fruit juice options, including a mix of kale, apple, pineapple, cucumber, ginger and mint juice...talk about a healthy overdose!
Suzette is well known for its health-friendly, vegan and gluten-free meals, and so, naturally, we decided to sample their salads. We picked the Quinoa taboule, which had quinoa, fresh and sundried tomatoes, cucumber, flat parsley, mint and lime. And we also tried the kale salad—shredded kale, avocado, Parmesan, bread crumbs, crushed, black pepper, olive oil and lime dressing. We will go back for it.
For those with a sweet tooth, Suzette offers plenty of options, particularly sweet crepes, which can made eggless on request. Having already had our fill of the crepes, we chose the NYC cheesecake and ooh-ed and aah-ed over it, polishing off every bit of the crust. Suzette’s Powai outlet has a bakery which bakes traditional French breads, croissants and desserts daily, which is just one more of the many reasons to go get a slice of Paris at Suzette!
And if you don’t want to take the sweet route, end your meal with a cup of tea—they have organic Indian teas, green teas and even caffeine-free teas.
Price: Rs 1,000 approximately (meal for two)
